For The Greater Good

For the Greater Good” is the debut album from Colonel Blast. It is best described as heavy music that touches on subjects important to us all, though you may not know it yet. Culture, society, obsession, life, love and hope for change.

Below is part of an interview with Matt, our vocalist, which gives a breakdown of the tracks and their meanings…

On the albums theme…

Whilst the record isn’t a concept album there is a theme which is disgust and frustration at what Britain and the world has become and is becoming. Humanity is gradually destroying itself by corroding the minds of youth with reality TV and the fascination with rich, stupid celebrities.

On the album title…

The phrase “for the greater good” pops up everywhere and the moral and ethical connotations have always intrigued me. The idea that an action is for the good of the many but not necessarily the few can be seen in a number of the songs and it ties the vibe of the record together.

Track by Track breakdown

Each a song has an underlying concept but, I hope that people can interpret the songs in their own way and take something different that’s personal to them.

01. Ethical Betrayal

Is it ever ethically sound to betray someone? For example, if someone’s behaviour is putting you or your friends at risk, is it ever acceptable to blow the whistle and drop that certain someone in it?

02. Management Coat Competition

This song is about the politics of promotion within any company and about managers who spout the same old bullshit excuses for keeping you in your place.

03. Savour The Flavour

This song is about the cult of celebrity and how ace would it be for them to be eaten by zombies as penance for their stupidity!

04. For The Greater Good i) The Best Intentions

This song is a call-to-arms from a group who wish to add a “Battle Royale” twist to reality TV shows by proposing that the exiting house-mate is gunned down on live TV. It’s a strong action but one that aims to shake the people out of their collective slumber.

05. For The Greater Good ii) In The Cold Light of Day

This companion piece to “The Best Intentions” considers the fall-out when the plan fails and looks at the stupidity of the modern society who are transfixed on reality TV shows and can’t see that their minds are rotting.

06. The Beacon

This is the album’s love song. It’s about having someone rescue you and guide you to a better place. From my point of view it’s not about God or faith but, if people want to read it that way then they’re more than welcome.

07. Frozen In Apathy

This song is about people who are offered opportunities and can’t be arsed to take them.

08. Blofeld Never Died

Super-villains are awesome and this song is about one of the best coming out of retirement and seeing an opportunity to take over the world.

The album was released with an initial limited run of handmade copies which sold out on pre order. These versions were numbered and featured hand written lyric sheets, in a specially designed card case with a front cut out to showcase the album cover art. This was held together by a strip printed with the bands logo.

Due to demand for more physical copies the band produced a white digipack version of the album. This was featured custom artwork hand transferred on to the digipack’s by the band themselves who were keen to keep an element of individuality for each physical release.

The album in it’s physical form is now sold out. It is available to buy from all the usual digital retailers and from the Condate Records webstore.
